Your first reformer pilates class: Everything You need to know
Nervous before your first class? Don’t be, we all have to start somewhere. Nerves are just a lack of knowledge, so to ease them here are a few things to know so you can walk through the door prepared and comfortable.
1. BEFORE YOU ARRIVE
Booking the class: For your safety, you must learn how to correctly use the reformer machine and the essential skills that will lay the foundation for your progress. Our Tone - Level 1 classes are the best place to begin. At Mood Reformer, we ask all new members (even those with reformer experience) to start with these classes because we take safety seriously. To achieve your fitness and wellness goals, it’s important you start with the correct foundation - that is why our main focus is on form and technique.
Arrive 5-10 minutes early: Let the instructor know this is your first class. They will show you how the springs work, how to adjust the footbar, how the carriage moves, and how to get on and off safely.
Make sure you’ve let us know of any injuries: When signing up, you will be asked if you have any injuries or conditions that we should know of. Before every class, the instructor will ask if you have any injuries, pain or medical conditions - so if there is anything bothering in the moment or at any point during class, speak up. Our instructors will modify the movements so that you continue safely exercising.
2. WHAT TO BRING
Grip socks: these are available to purchase at the studio or you can bring your own. These are compulsory as they prevent slipping on the carriage and footbar. Making sure your socks are in a good condition is important.
Water bottle: hydration is so important. In class, there will be moments where you can grab a drink to refuel your body. We do also have a water fountain and cups available at the studio if you do forget to bring your own.
Towel/grip mat: if you have a towel or a special reformer grip mat, please bring it to class. We have towels available at the studio if needed. This is important for hygiene.
3. WHAT TO WEAR
Shoes: wear any shoes, you can leave them on the shelves in a side room at the studio. Before you get on the reformer, take your shoes off and put your grip socks on.
Wear Fitted Clothing: Loose or baggy clothing can catch on the springs, footbar or other parts of the reformer machine, so for safety it’s important to wear clothing that avoids this. It is also helpful for the instructor to see your form and offer corrections. This does not mean you have to wear a matching set, or the latest trend. There is no judgement at Mood Reformer so make sure you are comfortable in what you are wearing.
3. THE REFORMER MACHINE
The reformer machine can look a little complicated at first. You will find you get the hang of things very quickly. There are a few parts that you should know.
The carriage: is the flat padded platform that slides back and forth along rails.
The springs: connect the carriage to the frame. The springs are colour coded to indicate different tension levels. You do not need to know the spring system in detail for your first class just know that when the instructor says “add a spring” or “take off a red,” they are adjusting the resistance.
The footbar is the adjustable bar at one end. Your instructor will set the height.
The straps: are adjustable ropes with handles or loops attached at the other end. These can be used with your hands or feet to perform a wide variety of exercises.
The shoulder blocks are the padded blocks on the carriage behind your shoulders. They keep you from sliding when you press. Your instructor will check they are positioned correctly for your height.
4. WHAT TO EXPECT IN YOUR FIRST CLASS
We want you to feel welcome from the moment you step in. Our instructors are down to earth and want you to feel your best. Classes will typically begin with breathing and movements to warm up your body. In class, you will learn how to engage your core, effectively use your breath, control your movements and stretch your body.
Everyone is on their own journey, their are no comparisons or competitions in our classes. The instructor will provide modifications if needed.
Prepare to leave feeling refreshed and reenergised. It is completely normal to feel muscles you didn't know existed in class. Make sure to drink plenty of water and stretch if you need!
